Twenty-nine years after opening the Olympic Hotel in 1926, Jackie Souders is in his element at the hotel’s Spanish Ballroom in 1955. Front row (left to right): Dean Curtis, Max Pillar, Dick Rose, reeds; Souders; Jean Olson, Evelyn Hunter, and Evelyn Roderique, violin. Back row: Jim Weaver, Don Anderson, trumpet; Chris Schafer, trombone; Murray Sennett, drums; Mickey Ingalls, piano. Playing bass is old Souders hand Forrie Hart. “Jackie Souders treated you like family,” said longtime saxophonist Dick Rose. “He paid better than anybody, his music was first-rate, and he worked a lot.” Courtesy of Dick Rose

The Magic Inn got hefty competition in 1954 when Norm Bobrow opened the swankiest nightspot since Club Victor, the Colony. An eternally restless jazz promoter and publicist, Bobrow was at loose ends when opportunity knocked. “This was a job that came looking for me,” Norm recalled in his downtown apartment.
